Title: From MEMS to Microsystems: Learning to Exploit Dominant Physical Phenomena at Scale

Abstract:
Sandia has been engaged in Microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) research since the late 1980's.  The initial motivation was the investigation of emergent MEMS technology to miniaturize existing macroscale mechanical structures.  Through learnings in the development of our MEMS technology and continuous interactions with the broad research community, we evolved our research program from a MEMS focus to a Microsystems focus, and expanded our thinking beyond miniaturization of macro structures to exploiting physics at scale.  This talk will describe the evolution and conclude with several novel Microsystems examples.
